The Pea Viner
The pea harvest at that time was preformed with
the use of a reaper with a pick-up attachment for the sickelle
or cutting bar. The peas were then hand loaded on hay rack
styled wagons and trucks and hauled to the viner site.
The Pea Viner is a machine which gently rolls the pea vines and
pods, allowing only the peas to collect in boxes called "lugs".
This Pea Viner is not as large as a commercial unit, however,
the same process was used to remove the peas from the pods &
vines. The purpose for this small pea viner was to establish the
condition of the pea pods to conclude whether the peas were
right for harvest. A trial cutting of pea vines was processed
through this machine to establish the ripeness of the peas.
